Southeastern Louisiana University will host the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Louisiana Girls State program June 8-14, 2025. Louisiana Girls State is a summer leadership and citizenship program sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary for high school students who have completed their junior year.

“We are honored to have been selected to serve as the host of Louisiana Girls State,” said Southeastern President William S. Wainwright. “Girls State and Southeastern share a common vision in preparing future leaders to become strong citizens who will shape our communities in positive ways beyond measure.”

Assistant Director of Auxiliary Services Keonta Johnson said they are excited to host the American Legion Auxiliary Louisiana Girls State program on campus next summer.

“The Office of Event and Conference Services has been working side by side with Director Rachel Funel and Louisiana Girls State staff to assess the needs of the program,” Johnson said. “We believe this new partnership will be an excellent opportunity to provide their delegates with the environment, facilities, and resources required for a successful program as we will guarantee a level of service that will exceed their expectations.”

The high school students (delegates) are competitively selected from their schools and districts to attend the ALA Louisiana Girls State program. American Legion Auxiliary Louisiana Girls State Director Rachel Funel said the delegates will have an amazing week of learning focused on responsible citizenship, leadership, and love for the ALA’s mission of serving veterans, military, and their families.

“This exciting move marks a new chapter in our program’s history, and we are eager to embrace the opportunities that Southeastern will provide for our delegates and staff,” Funel said. “The beautiful campus and state-of-the-art facilities will offer an enhanced environment for our leadership training, civic engagement activities, and community building. We look forward to collaborating with the Southeastern community to create an unforgettable experience for our delegates.”

Delegates and ALA Louisiana Girls State program staff will utilize the newest residence halls – Twelve Oaks and Ascension halls – and several university buildings during their stay.
