A murderous lecture, vocal concert, and wine tasting round out the 39th season of Fanfare, Southeastern Louisiana University’s annual fall festival of the arts, humanities and social sciences.
Kicking off the week Wednesday, Oct. 30, is the next History and Political Science Department’s lecture of the Then and Now lecture series. Scheduled in the Student Union Theatre at 11 a.m., the lecture, titled “Murder in the Age of the Tudors: Tales of Historical Homicidal Halloween Horror,” will be given by Southeastern History and Political Science Department Head William Robison.
The more-or-less annual Halloween lecture, according to Robison, returns with the usual mix of scholarship, silliness, and sweets as he discusses the 16th century English equivalent of a modern police procedural, showing how Tudor law enforcement officials investigated and prosecuted cases of homicide, with case studies to illustrate the process. Non-lethal candy will be gently thrown at the conclusion of the lecture, Robison said.
Next up on Nov. 2, at 5 p.m. is a vocal presentation from Southeastern Bella Voce and the Concert Choir titled “Joining in Song Concert.” Scheduled in Pottle Auditorium, the concert will also feature Courtney Christian, Woodlawn High School, and Hammond High Magnet choirs.
The final installment of the Then and Now lecture series is scheduled Nov. 7 in the Student Union Theatre. Beginning at 12:30 p.m., the lecture will be delivered by Associate Curator of the National WWII Museum and Southeastern graduate Chase Tomlin. Tomlin will present “Honoring Veterans at the World War II Museum,” in honor of Veterans Day. In his three years as curator, Tomlin has grown the museum’s collection through acquisition of thousands of artifacts, led countless tours, and driven through New Orleans in a command car, amphibious jeep, and M-4 Sherman tank.
Rounding out Fanfare on Nov. 8 is a fundraiser with a kick for Sims Memorial Library. Scheduled at 6:30 p.m. on the second floor of Sims Library, the 16th annual Friends of Sims Library Annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction will feature several wines paired with five food samplings, live music, a silent auction that boasts art, books, wine and gift certificates for restaurants, events, and services. Buddies Bar and Grill will return as caterers for the event.
“Wines will be procured from The Red, White and Brew in downtown Hammond. Eric Johnson, President of the Friends of Sims Library, will provide details about the wine’s vintage and flavor adding to the evening’s culinary experience,” said Director of Sims Memorial Library David Sesser.
The Friends of Sims Library is the organization that supports the activities and collections of the library. Funds generated by the Friends are used to supplement the library’s annual budget, purchase needed equipment and resources, and provide programs, lectures, author readings and signings, and other special events. Additional sponsors include Pat Macaluso, Todd Delaune of The Red, White and Brew, and individual Board Members.
Tickets are $85 each and are available online at
www.southeastern.edu/librarywine. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the tasting beginning at 7 p.m. Space is limited, so reservations should be made by Nov. 1 to guarantee seating. Tickets will not be sold at the door.
Fanfare events are free, unless otherwise noted. For more information, contact the Columbia/Fanfare office at 985-549-2999.
