Celebrating the Writer’s Voice

The Pick is a journal of outstanding student works from across the Southeastern Louisiana
University curriculum. Published bi-annually by the English Department and the Southeastern Writing Center, The Pick encourages and accepts written works from graduate and undergraduate students in
all departments.

First established in 1939, the publication was known as The Pick of the Patch until 1956, when it became The Pick. Although publication was suspended in 1984, it was re-established in 1987, with
Volume 34 having been published in the fall of 2007. Submissions are welcome year-round
and will be published in the issue then in production.

Also, to benefit both the student and the publication, all works are subject to an
intensive peer-review process prior to acceptance. Students whose papers are conditionally
accepted then are asked to meet with the editor to collaborate on proposed revisions.
Faculty committee members also review the papers and suggest additional modifications
to ensure that only the most outstanding work is presented for publication.

In addition to showcasing works from the Department of Teaching and Learning and featuring
service-learning reflections in our editions, we desire to embrace more departmental
works from across the campus and encourage students from all disciplines to submit
their class compositions.

Copies of The Pick, submission forms, and guidelines are available in the Writing Center and online.
Faculty members are encouraged to submit works on behalf of their students, as well
as to urge their students to submit their own pieces. Please contact The Pick at [email protected] or via telephone at (985) 549-2076 with any questions.

Not only does the publication serve as a superb reference tool for faculty members,
students, and tutors, but The Pick also provides an excellent opportunity for students to begin or to expand their publishing
careers.

Help us to “celebrate the writer’s voice” by making your submissions and letting The Pick pick you for publication!
