HAMMOND – The Sociology and Criminal Justice Department at Southeastern Louisiana University and the Lavender Lions, a campus LGBTQI+ student organization, will present a drag show to raise awareness about sexual health and the challenges that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people face in accessing health care. Titled “The Birds, The Bees, and Debbie with a D: A Public Health Drag Show,” the event is scheduled Oct. 19, at 7 p.m., in the Student Union Theater.
“This drag show is an opportunity for everyone in our community to learn more about sexual health, specifically to help the LGBTQI+ community gain reliable information,” said Associate Professor of Sociology and faculty advisor for the Lavender Lions Marc Settembrino.
New Orleans drag queen and health educator Debbie with a D will serve as the host of the show, which is free and open to the public.
“Drag is a uniquely queer art form that is integral to our community. Drag shows are a lot of fun, and this show will celebrate queer joy with the goal of keeping our community safe,” Settembrino explained.
