HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University’s Communication Sciences and Disorders department will host a fundraiser in New Orleans called “Rockin’ for a Reason” on Sunday, Jan. 14, from 1 to 4 p.m. Scheduled at Rock ‘n Bowl, located at 3016 South Carrollton Ave., the fundraiser will benefit special needs children and Southeastern speech-language therapy students. Tickets are $30, and all attendees must be 18 and older.
“Join us for an afternoon of live music, bowling, and a silent auction at Rockin for a Reason,” said Southeastern CSD Instructor and Clinical Educator Melanie Barranco Mulkey. “Not only will you be supporting a great cause, but you’ll also get to enjoy the fun and safe atmosphere of Rock ‘n Bowl in New Orleans.”
For the cost of admission, attendees will enjoy the music of the Lauren Lee Band, as well as bowling lane, shoe rentals and parking.
“There are currently over 500 students with special needs in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Most cannot attend school if they have a disability,” Mulkey explained. “Fifteen of my speech therapy students are planning a study abroad trip to the TCI to assist these special needs children and their families.”
Monies raised will allow Southeastern CSD students to volunteer at Ashley’s Learning Center, a non-profit school for special needs children created by desperate parents; purchase materials and host and run a two-day “Speech Camp” for local children with communication deficits; and provide much needed training, tools and support to the local community, caregivers, teachers and professionals.
“Don’t miss out on this opportunity to make a difference in the lives of these precious children and their families,” Mulkey said. “Your support also benefits our speech-language therapy students by teaching them about global compassion, cultural humility, international collaboration, diversity and service to others.”
