Southeastern Louisiana University’s Contemporary Art Gallery is presenting a solo exhibition by Latvian artist Līga Spunde titled “Episodes About Not Knowing.” Curated by Maija Rudovska, the exhibition will be open through Nov. 13.
The exhibition features a Latvian character, among other characters, and emphasizes the lack of stability behind the current conditions in which we live, said Contemporary Gallery Director Cristina Molina. The sometimes cliched nature of the characters, created by Spunde, symbolizes a collective state of mind in times of uncertainty, where we tend to fall back on archetypes, often adopting cliched thoughts and feelings, she explained.
“Līga Spunde makes multimedia installations where personal narratives are closely intertwined with carefully constructed fictions. The interpretation and use of recognizable characters serves as an extension of her personal experiences, while tapping into general truths and accepted tropes,” Molina said. “Usually, the content of the work determines the physical form of the conception, so a variety of media, techniques and materials are used in her unique installations.”
Spunde has participated in various solo and group exhibitions and art projects internationally such as Measures, Survival Kit 15th (Latvian Center for Contemporary Art), Down the Rabbit Hole (MO Museum, Vilnius, LT), Identity Flux (Garage Rotterdam, NL), a panic attack on a sunny day (Tuesday to Friday Gallery, Valencia, ES), among others. Recently, she has participated in the residencies at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, Korea, and International Studio & Curatorial Program, New York.
Rudovska is a curator, art critic, and educator. She holds an MA in art history from the Art Academy of Latvia in 2009 and has completed postgraduate studies in curating from Curatorlab in the Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, Stockholm, Sweden. Currently she is a PhD student at the Estonian Academy of Arts, Tallinn, Estonia. She has worked on art projects in Europe and the U.S., curating exhibitions at Manifesta biennial, the Foundation Ricard, Komplot, the Bozar Centre for Fine Arts, Futura, the Moderna Museet, and elsewhere.
The exhibition is supported by Latvian Culture Capital fund, Southeastern, and Southeastern Contemporary Art Gallery. RJ Project Studio is responsible for the exhibition installation, with help from Molina and gallery work study students Madison Davis, Cara Grant, Jolie Gunter, and Sara Torres.
Additional programs are planned at the gallery in conjunction with the exhibition. Anne-Liese Fox and Spunde will present character building through writing and movement Oct. 24, at 11 a.m., and Roberts Jansons will present texture and pattern making Nov. 1, at 9 a.m.
Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m.
