Letter from Jack B. McGuire to St. Tammany Historical Society, dated May 12, 1998,
enclosed with donations from Richard W. Leche, Jr. of stamp covers with special associations,
such as the last day of cancellations for a Post Office being closed. They are: 1)
An envelope addressed to Governor and Mrs. Leche and family, which has the St. Benedict
cancellation, and a date stamp on the back that it was received in Covington, December
22, 1943; 2) Color postcard of St. Gertrude’s Convent in Ramsay, La. which has a November
15, 1954 Ramsay cancellation stamp, which was the last day in service of that Post
Office; 3) Stamped cover dated September 30, 1955 from Saint Benedict, which has the
Post Office’s stamp that this was the “Last Day of Postal Operation.”
