Student Self-Care Checklist

These are the most commonly recommended over the counter medications to treat the
most common illnesses and useful supplies. Do not take any medication if you are allergic
to it or have medical conditions that could be worsened by any of these medications.

  • Digital Thermometer
  • Kleenex
  • Tweezers
  • Bandaids
  • Heating Pad
  • Sun Screen
  • Insect Repellent
  • Chapstick
  • Visine for dry, itchy eyes
  • Tylenol (Acetaminophen) for fever, headache, pain
  • Motrin/Advil (Ibuprofen) for fever, headache, pain
  • Claritin (loratadine) OR Zyretec (cetirizine) OR Allegra (fexofenadine) for allergy and common cold symptoms like running rose, sneezing, post nasal drip,
    itching/ red/watery eyes.
  • Flonase (fluticasone nasal) OR Nasacort (triamcinolone nasal) steroid nasal sprays for allergy and cold symptoms. Also helps with pressure/congestion
    in ears.
  • Sudafed (pseudophedrine/phenylephrine) for nasal/sinus/head pressure or congestion and clogged/pressure in ears. Do not
    take if you have high blood pressure.
  • Saline Nasal Spray for nasal congestion and post nasal drip
  • Benadryl (diphenhydramine) works well for allergies or insect bites (wasp/caterpillar stings)
  • Delsym (Dextromethorphan) to quiet a cough
  • Mucinex/robitussin (guaifenesin) works well for chest congestion/coughing and loosening phlegm in the chest.
  • Sore throat lozenges
  • Cough drops
  • Pepto-Bismol for nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Antibacterial Ointment (Neosporin)
  • Hydrocortisone cream for reducing redness, itching and swelling associated with insect
    bites or rashes.
  • Antacid (Tums, Maalox) for indigestion, heart burn.
