2010 Distinguished Alumnus: Wanda Spurlock

Wanda Spurlock

Dr. Wanda Spurlock of Baton Rouge has been a specialist in dementia care for more
than 20 years. After receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing form Southeastern,
she earned a master’s degree in psychiatric and mental health nursing and a doctorate
with a focus on nursing and Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. Spurlock has made numerous contributions to communities and health care facilities
serving the needs of the elderly and has received several awards and citations for
her volunteerism in the area of Alzheimer’s services. She was honored in 2009 with
a Nightingale Award from the Louisiana State Nurses Association Foundation for outstanding
community services by a registered nurse. An author and member of the Southern University
School of Nursing Faculty, she also serves as an adjunct professor to the Aging and
Life Course Center at LSU. Dr. Spurlock is recognized for her contributions to nursing
education, research and practice.
