The Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies is excited to house the Master of Science in Athletic Training degree (MSAT). This degree will provide a comprehensive, progressive, educational and clinical foundation to prepare graduates for a career in Athletic Training. Certified Athletic Trainers are healthcare professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients in professional and collegiate sports, public and private schools, sports medicine clinics, occupational health settings, physician offices, as well as many other emerging and developing settings. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and intervention of emergency, acute and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations and disabilities. Athletic training is recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) as a healthcare profession.
What is Athletic Training?
Athletic Training encompasses the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions, primarily in active individuals. Athletic training is recognized by the American Medical Association as an allied health care profession.
Who are athletic trainers?
As a part of the health care team, athletic trainers provide services that include primary care, injury prevention, education, examination and clinical diagnosis, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.
In line with other healthcare disciplines, certification to be an athletic trainer now requires the completion of an entry-level master’s degree. Our M.S. in Athletic Training provides the content, skills, and clinical experiences required to take the national certification exam for athletic training (NATABOC). Applications for entry are accepted every Spring semester. Admitted students begin in the Summer term, and progress through the degree in a cohort, completing the degree in 2.5 years (Summer, Fall, Spring, Fall, Spring).
