Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences

The Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences degree prepares students to pursue a variety of career opportunities in public health, health care, population health and other health science related industries. Coursework focuses on evidence-based public health strategies to prevent chronic disease and promote community population health. Graduates will be prepared with a solid undergraduate foundation to pursue further graduate study and/or professional degrees in pre-health, such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician assistant, dental hygiene, public health, and athletic training. Additionally, it provides students with the skills and competencies of the Certified Health Education Specialist.

Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education K-12 (Teacher Education)

Students completing the B.S. in Health and Physical Education Teacher Education complete the requirements for Louisiana teacher certification in both Health and Physical Education K-12. Students in this major may also pursue add-on certification in Adapted Physical Education or other content areas.

Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, Concentration in Exercise Science

The BS in Kinesiology (Exercise Science concentration) provides a strong science-based academic preparation for students who wish to pursue study in physical therapy or occupational therapy. This undergraduate program is also an appropriate choice for students who seek fitness-based careers, particularly those in clinical settings, such as cardiac rehabilitation.

Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, Concentration in Fitness and Human Performance

The BS in Kinesiology (Fitness and Human Performance concentration) is designed to prepare students for careers in fitness and exercise specialties. Graduates seek employment in personal training, corporate fitness/wellness, and athletic strength and conditioning. It also provides entry requirements for most occupational therapy programs.

Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, Concentration in Fitness and Human Performance (Accelerated)

The Kinesiology program offers an accelerated pathway that students may choose to complete their undergraduate degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Fitness and Human Performance within 6 regular semesters and 2 regular summer sessions (three years). Upon completion of the undergraduate degree, students will be eligible to apply for admission to the Master of Science in Athletic Training program (MSAT). Students may apply to the MSAT program while undergraduate coursework is in progress. Students are eligible to begin the MSAT program upon completion of all graduate admission requirements and formal acceptance into the program. The graduate program will begin in the summer session each year and will run as a cohort model.

Bachelor of Science in Sport Management

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Sport Management prepares students both for graduate studies and employment in a variety of sport and recreational settings, playing a role in economic, sport, leisure, and fitness of the region.

Southeastern Louisiana University students are in a geographical location that encourages practical experience. The University is roughly 45 miles away from New Orleans, the home of the New Orleans Saints, Voodoo, Pelicans, and the New Orleans Sport Foundation. Likewise, Baton Rouge is roughly 35 minutes from the campus and offers a variety of recreational and sport businesses where students can gain valuable experience. Baton Rouge offers the nationally recognized Baton Rouge Recreation Department, Youth and Adult Soccer Leagues, and the Baton Rouge Sports Foundation.

Sport management professionals can be found working in a number of settings within the fields of sport and leisure/recreation. Some settings for employment include:

  • Professional, Collegiate, and Amateur/Olympic Sport Organizations
  • YMCA’s and Municipal Recreation Departments
  • Private clubs (i.e. tennis or golf)
  • Entertainment industry

Adapted Physical Education Add-On Certification

The Kinesiology and Health Studies Department at Southeastern is one of few programs in Louisiana offering courses leading to add-on teacher certification in Adapted Physical Education (APE). 

Teachers certified in Health and PE may pursue an add-on certification in APE by taking a few specific courses. They may be taken as undergraduate or graduate-level courses. Those wishing to pursue a master’s degree may incorporate APE coursework into the MA in Health and Kinesiology.

If you have completed all 21 semester hours as listed above and wish to receive a formal evaluation for the purpose of obtaining additional certification, you must send your official transcripts(s) with a completed Change-of-Action Packet to the Louisiana Department of Education, Division of Teaching Certification and Higher Education.  If you have any questions concerning this procedure, you may call 1-877-453-2721.

All of the APE-specific courses (491/591, 492/592, 493/593, 494/594) are offered on a rotating basis as evening courses and/or during the summer session.

For those interested in pursuing the MA in Health and Kinesiology, APE coursework may be included in the Kinesiology concentration. This concentration would include a total of 36 hours (12 courses):

6 hours – Statistics and Research Methods

9 hours – Primary Emphasis (APE)

6 hours – Secondary Emphasis

6 hours – Secondary Emphasis

9 hours – Electives (may include APE and SPED coursework)

Areas for Secondary Emphasis are: Exercise Physiology, Health Studies, Motor Behavior, Sport & Exercise Psychology, Sport Management.
