HAMMOND – Three lectures, and a chamber orchestra concert opera highlight the events scheduled the second week in October during the 37th season of Fanfare, Southeastern Louisiana University’s annual fall arts festival.
First up is an English Department Common Read lecture on Oct. 12 at 9:30 a.m. Scheduled on the third floor in Sims Memorial Library, Alysia Anderson and Sherri Craig will present “This Girl is Going Places: The Multimedia Work of Eve L. Ewing, and Anne Babson will present “The Lyrical Sociiology in Eve L. Ewing’s poetry.”
A second Common Read lecture follows on Oct. 12 at 11 a.m. Also scheduled in Sims Library, third floor, this lecture will feature Randall Frederick presenting “Reading Beyond Expectations: Why You Don’t Like Poetry (and Maybe Never Will) and Alison Pelegrin presenting “Origin Stories: Generative Zine-Making Workshop.”
Also scheduled Oct. 12 is the next History and Political Science Fanfare lecture. Scheduled at 1 p.m. in Pottle Auditorium, “Able Archer 83: The Nuclear Scare That Nobody Talks About” will be presented by history graduate student Emma Brock, who will explore the underrated but ‘second hottest’ event of the Cold War.
“In fall 1983, NATO forces participated in yearly military games, while their Soviet counterparts prepared for a highly anticipated nuclear first strike that never came,” said History and Political Science Department Head Bill Robison. “Relations between the Soviet Union and the United States hit an all-time low during the early 80s, while propaganda, aggressive rhetoric, and dreams of space lasers hit an all-time high.”
Lastly, on Oct. 12, at 7 p.m., the Southeastern Chamber Orchestra presents “English Serenades” in Pottle Auditorium. The free concert will feature music by Elgar, Holst, Britten, Warlock and more.
Fanfare events are free, unless otherwise noted. For more information, contact the Columbia/Fanfare office at 985-549-2999.
