Health & Human Sciences

The Department of Health and Human Sciences offers four undergraduate programs in communication sciences and disorders, family and consumer sciences, health systems management, and social work, as well as two graduate programs in communication sciences and disorders and counseling.

Our goal is to provide students with opportunities to grow personally and professionally, preparing them for their chosen careers.

COVID-19 Message:

Our Department office is now fully back on campus. Please be aware that masks are required in all campus buildings. In White Hall and Campbell Hall we are limited to one student at a time in the offices and there are no waiting areas inside so please plan accordingly when coming to campus.



  • Hands-on learning is emphasized through internships, service learning, and clinical practicums

  • Students in the Communication Sciences & Disorders program operate a communitySpeech-Language-Hearing Clinic on campus

  • The Renew/ Discovery Project, supported through the social work program, is a family resource center providing services to families in south Louisiana

  • The social work program has partnered with the Department of Child & Family Services to manage the operation of the Louisiana Child Welfare Training Academy.

  • Family and Consumer Sciences faculty member Dr Holly Kihm partners with researchers at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge to run the Interactive Physical Activity Lab for Children and Youth, examining motivation in exercise in a project that targets childhood obesity
